Oakland’s art scene should put together a bunch of billboard sized oiled dolphins and put them on ClearChannel’s billboards all over 880, 580 and downtown. Also paint them onto the pavement of Oakland’s major roads to “drive” the fucking point home.
For instance, this dead oiled dolphin. She washed up on a Florida beach today covered in 1/4 inch of oil and died after being rescued…
We killed this dolphin. By greed, indifference, laziness.
Driving a car is like driving over animals and people every day. Car kill, not road kill, is the honest description. But here we are getting into a guns vs people kill people debate. A bus still depends on oil to be made and operated. Is BART the answer? It’s better sure, but with an electric train we’re then responsible for “mountaintop removal” and stripping forests to get to coal.
Time to watch Princess Mononoke or some other Ghibli movie again. Anna, lend me your box set!
So, with a heavy heart, I leave you with this “news” show.
All we can do is muddle, and laugh.
So as you know, things are both better and worse for OPD this year.
I’ll focus on the better things here.
1. OPD work shift moved from ex-Chief Tucker’s batshit crazy 12-hour shift, to current Chief Batts’ more normal 10-hour shift. This is good on so many self-evident levels.
2. OPD got itself a new squad car that isn’t the same ugly old Ford Victoria. Finally! I saw it today, it’s not completely covered in decals yet. It’s a 2009 Chrysler Charger. I suggested on this blog previously that the department should do that to raise employee morale. I dare say it is working. In Asphaltistan, what your car looks like matters. It reflects on you, your organization, your clients and projects an “image.” Take that, Alameda and Albany.
Yes this is a really shallow update, but it is an update. Signing off…
An Oakland streetcar plan, looking much like Detroit’s or Charlotte’s, escaped today onto the interwebs. Must be end of the semester. No really!
Okay, so a (potentially) prospective grad student posted it, and many kudos.
This is something *I* wanted to make. My ego is bruised: http://www.oaklandstreetcarplan.com/ j/k.
